It’s going to take a lot for me to trust iCloud Drive with that again.) (I haven’t moved my Soulver sheetbook back to iCloud though. For now (26 Jan), Cloud Battery and Transloader are working for me again. Update: Zervaas said on 25 Jan he saw a big drop-off in 503 errors. iCloud syncing issues are plaguing third-party apps as Apple stays silent (9to5Mac).Developers Unhappy With Bug Causing iCloud Unreliability (MacRumors). My question now - having apparently decided at the worst possible time to bin Dropbox and go all-in on Apple’s equivalent - is whether I can trust iCloud sync and iCloud Drive at all.Īn hour or so after I posted this piece, some of the Mac website giants stomped on in with their takes. That’s just what everyone - users and developers alike - want to hear about the reliability (or lack thereof) of such a critical service. Several devs noted Apple is at least “aware” of the problem, but it’s apparently been rumbling on for eight months now, and is, as Zevaas suggests “seemingly quite random”. For an issue that at best causes somewhat random sync failure for the apps that differentiate Apple’s devices and that at worst can cause catastrophic and unrecoverable data loss. A quick look on Reddit had already suggested to me that the problem had in fact been around for months, rather than days terrifyingly, Zervaas said he’d seen this issue “on and off since May 2021”, and his own app only currently fully works on some of his Apple IDs. Developer Becky Hansmeyer kicked off a thread about the issue, which ended up starring, among others, Paul Haddad (Tapbots), Adam Overholtzer (Cheatsheet), and Quentin Zervaas (Streaks). I tested the old one several times on iCloud, and it went wrong half a dozen times. I moved the sheetbook to local storage and had had no further problems. I sent grabs of my iCloud Drive folder where Soulver’s ‘sheetbook’ was stored, which now had an exciting and mysterious new file. I swapped messages with the app’s creator, who was mortified. This was a shock on multiple fronts: in part because of the data loss, but also because Soulver is one of the most robust apps I use. A week of input was wiped out in an instant. I needed to restart my iMac so was shutting down all my apps. ![]() Then Soulver failed - suddenly and very badly. I switched two devices to a spare account and Transloader worked fine. Since the ‘server’ in this case is iCloud, that was a concern. If you’re not familiar with arcane error codes, this one states a server is not able to handle a request. On iPhone, the app noted these were 503s. But then it started throwing up sync errors. Then I needed to use Transloader for something. Having just updated a bunch of them, I figured this was a bug in a nice but not critical piece of indie software and thought nothing more of it. ![]() The app syncs device battery status across iCloud, providing alerts across all your devices - handy when one needs charging. A week or so ago, Cloud Battery stopped working for me. ![]() I make this statement mindful of what Martin Luther King said… I am living testimony to the moral force of non-violence. This framing strategy is illustrated by sequences such as the following, in which all the propositions preceding the ‘but’ act as acknowledgemments which the following statement overrules: In speaking persuasively one must estimate when it might prove judicial to blur that distinction.Ī salient use of pre-emptive arguments involves the recognition and acknowledgment of the opposing position, maybe sympathising and even identifying with it, but then showing why the particular circumstances demand the alternative approach being proposed. It is good practice to listen out for such linguistic markers and focus on the proposition which follows the colon – to what extent is it subjective? In what ways is it disputable? And what other pertinent truths or facts does this particular proposition obscure? Such questions may be thought of as the ‘Pride and Prejudice test’, following one of the strongest assertions to be found in the first lines of a novel: ‘It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.’ In listening to others, one needs to distinguish between purported facts and established ones. Peace requires responsibility, peace entails sacrifice. To say that force may sometimes be necessary… is a recognition of history. For make no mistake: Evil does exist in the world. We must begin by acknowledging the hard trut.In Obama’s speech, we find several such assertions, of which these are some examples: However, it is important to recognise that what follows such expressions is not necessarily a universally acknowledged truth, but may be a subjective take on the world. Hence the emphasis in persuasive-speaking guides on gathering evidence and mastering the facts of one’s argument. Expressions such as the fact is, the truth is, the key point is, what is important is, all signal that one’s discussion is factual. The assertion of facts is one of the most emphatic ways of framing an issue. The next section considers the appeal to emotion, and the hand-in-glove relationship between reason and emotion are considered in the last section. This section focuses on those framing devices which appeal primarily to the power of reason, from assertion to typecasting and semantic categories. This speech can be seen as epitomising the exercise of framing, given the implausible task of using a peace prize as a venue in which to advocate war. This article considers the importance of framing in the exercise of persuasion and draws on Obama’s Nobel speech of December 2010 in order to illustrate the devices under discussion. The way in which we frame an issue largely determines how that issue will be understood and acted upon. African Digital Diplomacy and Governance. |
